All About Me (not)

Me and a friend
Me and a friend

Originally from England, I sought to escape the oppression and gloom of the Thatcher-Reagan years, finally landing on the shores of Taiwan in 1983. Taiwan was then booming under the world’s longest-lived martial law regime, so deciding to join in, I spent most of the next twenty years calling the ROC home, watching its emergence from martial law, its first tentative flirtations with a dual party system and its eventual whole-hearted embrace of democracy.

In the meantime, we had acquired a farm in Thailand’s mountainous northern province, Chiang Rai. In 2001, we and our motley collection of stray cats, dogs and civets settled permanently in their new home and began the painful and difficult transition to a life of leisure. The next few years were spent on the farm on an accelerated crash course in plantation management, pest control and Thai bureaucracy, in the process learning why so many people leave their farms for life in the city.

I continue to fund our money-eating agricultural experiments with teaching stints in out-of-the-way-but-lucrative places such as Libya and Saudi Arabia. I have also been honing my keyboard and writing skills and have become a regular contributor to regional and international travel and living-abroad magazines and websites such as couldyoulive-abroad.com.
